XIX International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival “Bir Duino – Kyrgyzstan 2025”
Theme: “Resilience in Times of Crisis”
Dedicated to the 80th Anniversary of the United Nations and the 50th Anniversary of the Helsinki Final Act
From December 12 to 16, 2025, Bishkek will host the XIX International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival “Bir Duino – Kyrgyzstan 2025.” The festival traditionally serves as an open platform for discussing documentary truth and promoting human rights, bringing together filmmakers, human rights defenders, experts, cultural figures, and civil society representatives from Kyrgyzstan and around the world.
In 2025, it continues to advance an innovative format — Human Rights through Art, combining cinema, public dialogue, and creative forms of civic engagement.
The 2025 edition is dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the United Nations and the 50th anniversary of the 1975 Helsinki Final Act — a landmark symbol of international cooperation and respect for human rights. Fifty years later, it is crucial to reaffirm commitment to its core principles: peace, human dignity, democracy, and cooperation among nations……………………………………………………………………………..
The OSCE Civil Solidarity Platform, uniting more than 100 NGOs, adopted a Civil Society Manifesto on the 50th anniversary of the Helsinki Final Act. The Manifesto urges participating States and OSCE structures to take concrete steps toward implementing the Helsinki principles and highlights the essential role of active civil society in this process.
The 2025 Festival emphasizes the continued relevance of these principles in the face of global challenges — climate, humanitarian, and social crises, growing inequality, and threats to democratic institutions.
The festival program features 22 films from Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Canada, India, Georgia, Switzerland, Germany, the Czech Republic, the United States, and New Zealand.
The protagonists of these films are people who preserve their dignity and inner strength in the face of social, climate, and political challenges. The films explore the rights of women and children, freedom of expression, the struggle for education and equality, the protection of memory and cultural heritage, and the relationship between humans and nature.
The festival program becomes a mirror of the modern world, where documentary cinema not only captures reality but also inspires action.
The festival also includes the youth program “Breakthrough,” which provides young filmmakers and students with the opportunity to present their works. The program aims to support a new generation of directors capable of speaking openly about change and inspiring society through cinema.
A special acknowledgment goes to Kamchybek Kadyrshaevich Tashiev, President of the Kyrgyz Football Union, for his support in organizing the festival and assisting in bringing the protagonists of the film — 20 women football players from the village of Aktash, Batken region.
The heroines will accompany the screening of the documentary film “Kickoff,” in which they starred while playing football, and will share their personal stories. The screening will take place on December 15 at the Flutter Hall, Technopark. It is important to note that this will be the first-ever visit to Bishkek for the participants of the film.
In addition to film screenings, the festival will host discussion labs, round tables, training workshops, and consultation platforms designed to exchange practical ideas and develop joint recommendations on human rights protection.
The festival is organized in cooperation with the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), its partner networks, women’s and environmental organizations, human rights defenders, documentary filmmakers, artists, and cultural community representatives.
The festival’s co-organizer is the Office of the Ombudsperson of the Kyrgyz Republic.
“Bir Duino – Kyrgyzstan” is a non-commercial and non-political initiative. All screenings and creative events are open to the public and free of charge.
