Urgent Statement

"About the importance of including of the Global Standard on Preventing and Addressing the Risk of Negative Human Rights Impacts Related to Business in the format of the first European Union-Central Asia Economic Forum ".
On March 21, 2021, an unprecedented event took place: the UN Human Rights Council endorsed a set of Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, which for the first time ever creates a global standard for preventing and addressing the risk of adverse human rights impacts related to business.
"The endorsement of these Guiding Principles by the UN Human Rights Council creates an official global benchmark for business with respect to human rights," said John Ruggie, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Business and Human Rights[1].
The new standards provide mechanisms for States and businesses to implement the basic pillars established by the UN with respect to protection, compliance and access to remedy, aimed at addressing business and human rights challenges more effectively.
Under the first pillar (the State duty to protect human rights), the Guiding Principles provide mechanisms through which the State can provide clearer expectations and uniform rules for business to respect human rights. Under the second pillar (the responsibility of business to respect human rights), the Guiding Principles provide guidance on how to ensure respect for human rights and how to report accordingly. The third pillar (access to effective remedy for human rights abuses) focuses on ensuring that those whose rights have been violated by corporate activities have access to means of holding perpetrators accountable and to judicial and non-judicial remedies for resolving problems[2].
The human rights movement "Bir Duino-Kyrgyzstan", member of FIDH, CSP, GNDR hopes that the high first EU-Central Asia Economic Forum will include both in the discussion process of the forum components and in the follow-up document, a new strategy to implement a set of Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights creating the first ever global standard to prevent and address the risk of business related negative human rights impacts in Central Asia.
