Participation of Bir Duino Kyrgyzstan Human Rights Movement in the Regional Meeting of the Asia Pacific Forum on Women, Rule of Law and Development

On 15-20 May 2023 an expert meeting of members of the Regional Council of Asia Pacific Forum on Women, Law and Development (APWLD) was held in Chiang Mai, Thailand to discuss joint actions on protection and promotion of rights of local communities with the focus on implementation in countries of South-East and Central Asian regions of the new Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights based on accountability of international financial institutions and large corporations in front of the UN General Assembly. As part of its training at the School of Business and Human Rights, the Bir Duino team is currently working in partnership with community leaders to improve the effectiveness of development bank investments and strengthen civil society monitoring and evaluation of mining companies and uranium waste remediation projects in the Kyrgyz Republic.
The Regional Forum focused on the importance of respecting and promoting human rights as a key element of corporate governance, respecting the rights and wellbeing of local communities to involve them in decision-making processes. Today, these principles are becoming key elements of corporate responsibility of business companies in adapting and applying human rights-based approaches in their activities, taking into account the interests and needs of local communities living in conditions of risks and disasters.
During the Regional Forum, a presentation by Bir Duino Kyrgyzstan Coordinator Murat Karypov focused on the importance of implementing joint actions to counter and reduce the risks of hazards to protect and promote the rights of local communities from local to global. With an increasing number of armed conflicts and the impact of climate change, especially when natural resources are limited, the most vulnerable groups, women and girls, are the first victims of cross-border clashes, which leads to a significant aggravation of the situation in the region.
Based on the results of the Regional Forum, the participants voted and decided by an absolute majority to include the Human Rights Movement "Bir Duino Kyrgyzstan" as a permanent member of the APWLD Global Partnership Network as the leading civil society organization in the Southeast and Central Asian region.
