The annual festival organised by Bir Duino-Kyrgyzstan will be held from 12th to 16th of November 2018 under the slogan “Today working for tomorrow!”.
Documentary filmmakers, experts in cinematography and human rights, guests from 14 countries will be taking part in the opening ceremony and festival events in Bishkek, including Dimitris Christopoulos, president of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), France, Brigitte Dufour, director of International Partnership for Human Rights (IPHR), France, John Samuel, executive director of the Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development, Thailand, Ondrey Kamenický, director of One World International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival, Czech Republic, as well as representatives of Italy, Sweden, the Netherlands, Central Asian states, Georgia, and Russia.
The official opening ceremony is taking place today at the conference hall of international Damas Hotel, and films will be demonstrated free of charge at city cinemas of Ala Too, Oktyabr, Rossiya, Manas on November 13-15, 2018. This year, the idea of the festival was supported by the Bishkek Mayor’s Office, akimiats, therefore documentary films will be demonstrated in every district of Bishkek.
Film scripts are focused on the issues of children, women and vulnerable groups, on tortures in closed facilities, migrants, people suffering from discrimination and having no access to fair justice. The films also tell about people who live in environmental hazardous regions and suffer from diseases and poverty. Following every film, documentary film makers will meet the audience, who will be able to talk to them and ask questions.
55 films of 18 countries such as Kyrgyzstan, Norway, Sweden, China, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Russia, Germany, Poland, Belgium, USA, Australia, India, United Kingdom, Canada, Ukraine, Paraguay, Republic of South Africa have been submitted to the festival. The committee has selected 24 most vivid and striking films. The jury will announce the winners and holders of special prizes on the last day of the festival.
The film festival will be held in the format of new initiatives by the Kyrgyz authorities intended to support small, medium enterprises in regions, to attract investments, to intensify efforts of financial institutions and funds that provide loans for projects that address economic development of the regions and job creation.
10 innovative labs and master classes will be held within the festival in terms of sustainable development goals, whose achievement is possible only through partnership with the government and private business, as well as through creative approaches to solution of vulnerable groups’ problems. The labs will create a platform for civil education, encouragement of citizens’ participation in decision-making, will contribute to the new development policies, including at the domestic level, promoting the good governance principles in the Kyrgyz Republic.

This is a unique festival in Central Asia that provides a great opportunity to discuss documentary truth in the human rights sphere by involving filmmakers from different countries.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which 70th anniversary is being celebrated this year, was adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 10, 1948 . This document declares interdependence of civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights that every person has.
