On 17 December 2019, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. the 24.kg news agency will host a solemn press conference on awarding the human rights defender Aleksei Petrushevsky the prestigious Human Rights Prize entitled “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity”.

Alexey Petrushevsky had been the head of the Center for the Rehabilitation of Children and Youth for 16 years. The Center provided safety, protection and care to over 1762 children-pupils who were in difficult circumstances.

The Human Rights Prize “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity” awarding ceremony was held on 10 December 2019 at the Ministry of Justice of the French Republic. This high award was presented by Ms. Nicole Bellubé, Keeper of the Seals, French Minister of Justice and Chair of the National Advisory Commission on Human Rights (CNCDH).

This year, the commission considered 164 candidates from 58 countries. Besides Aleksei Petrushevsky, human rights defenders from Peru, Croatia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda were awarded. All 15 members of the commission voted for A. Petrushevsky, thus he won the first place among all the applicants for the Prize.

At the press conference, Aleksey Petrushevsky will share his impressions and experience of participating in the awards ceremony, and will present to the public the project proposal “Brotherhood and Mentoring for Children in Difficult Circumstances”, which will be implemented thanks to the “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity” Prize.

The press conference will be supported by the Human Rights Movement “Bir Duino-Kyrgyzstan”, a partner organization and one of the key partners supporting the implementation of the project.

The following participants were invited to the press conference: Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of France to the Kyrgyz Republic, Mr. Michael Roux; Ombudsman of the Kyrgyz Republic, T. Mamytov, Chairman of the Coordination Council of the Kyrgyz Republic on Human Rights, Heads of the OHCHR Regional Office, UNICEF, European Union, OSCE Program Office, lawyers, partners and graduates of the Center for the Rehabilitation of Children and Youth.

Awarding of A. Petrushevsky the Prize “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity” is a great honor and recognition of the activities of the Kyrgyz human rights defender by the international community. We also hope for the support of the Government of Kyrgyzstan and look forward to see its principled commitment to protect and promote human rights in our country, support and respect human rights defenders in accordance with the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders , the OSCE Guidelines on the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and the Bratislava Declaration adopted by the participants of the parallel conference of civil society on 4 December 2019.
